BYU student tackles immigration and practical effects in short film
James Cutler tells how he turned a true story about his twin's struggles with immigration bureaucracy into a short film at FilmQuest. Brigham Young University student, James Cutler, is pursuing his PHD in engineering at Brigham Young University and using his passion for short films to explore immigration through practical effects. His latest short film, "Can I Put You On Hold?" is about a husband living in the U.S. while his wife, Dangmo Kanyawee, attempts to join him from Thailand, but she is denied a visa. The film was inspired by James Cutler's twin brother, Matthew Cutler, and his wife's struggles with immigration bureaucracy. The $5,000 grant from the Davey Foundation helped to start the making of "Can Can I Put Your On Hold?", which will be shown during FilmQuest's Utah's Shortblock on Monday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. at Velour, Downtown Provo.
