Second oldest congregation in Utah continues to serve Salt Lake City

The First Congregational Church is the first church outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be founded in Utah. More than a century later, the congregation still thrives. The First Congregational Church in Salt Lake City, the second oldest congregation in the state, continues to serve members of the community. The congregation dates back to 1865, when a Congregualational pastor rented public space to preach to those not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church used Independence Hall, a building that could seat up to 200 worshipers and was later used by many different religious organizations, including the First United Methodist Church, the Catholic Church, and the Episcopal Church. In 1889, the First Congregationational Church sold Independence Hall and moved into a new building, The Stone Church. The 1965 building was built using gray sandstone and different Romanesque techniques. The original pulpit from Independence Hall was used in The Stone church, which was gutted shortly after moving to the new building. The building will eventually be demolished to make way for additional housing.
