A Utah family said justice is being served after a man accused of killing his girlfriend in 2021 was extradited back to the United States.

According to the Taylorsville Police Department, the U.S. Marshall’s Office transported 36-year-old Manuel Omar Burciaga-Perea from federal prison in Mexico City to the Salt Lake City International Airport on Friday evening.

On Oct. 17, 2021, police said 38-year-old Gabriela “Gaby” Sifuentes Castilla, a local Spanish radio host, was shot seven times in her sister’s home in Taylorsville.

After his girlfriend’s death, Burciaga-Perea fled to his hometown of Chihuahua, Mexico.

• Suspect in Gaby Ramos murder believed to be in Mexico

Gaby’s sister, Rocio Sifuentes, said she witnessed Gaby's death and has waited a year-and-a-half for justice.

She’s hoping Gaby’s story will help other women in domestic violence situations.

“It’s not only justice for my sister; its justice for my niece, justice for all woman that suffer domestic violence,” Sifuentes said.

It took several agencies, including the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Marshalls Service, The Department of Justice in Washington D.C., The Mexican State Attorney General’s Office and federal Mexican court, to execute a warrant for Burciaga-Perea’s arrest.

“We are very, very pleased this is moving forward," Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam said. "This has been a very difficult case in the fact that obviously it was a violent criminal act of murder, but very difficult to process in the fact that we are dealing with a suspect who fled to Mexico right away, and that process takes quite a bit of time."

Gaby’s sister said now that he is in U.S. custody, she will finally be able to sleep at night.

“I have a lot of emotions, I have a lot of feelings. Finally, I can think about justice is going to be served, finally, this is just the beginning. I was there when he shot her, I saw him,” Sifuentes said.

She said her sister will always be remembered for the joy she brought others.

“She was super smart — she [did] psychology, by the way, an educated woman, super happy, she liked to help other people, so I miss her so much," Sifuentes said.

Burciaga-Perea is in the Salt Lake County Jail on charges for aggravated murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child.
