Spirit Airlines is launching new routes from Salt Lake City this summer, flying to San Diego and Fort Lauderdale.

In January 2022, Spirit Airlines announced its first four routes out of Salt Lake City International Airport. Two years later, the airline offers international flights from the Utah capital and is expanding its summer service to highly sought-after beach destinations in California and Florida. According to Cirium data, Spirit will launch flights to San Diego International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in June.

Every week, Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, publishes a recent changes report outlining what has changed in an airline's network since the previous week. This week, data shows several routes were added this summer, but two from Salt Lake City. Flights to Fort Lauderdale and San Diego will launch on June 20 and operate with the carrier's Airbus A321neos. By the beginning of July, both flights will be operated daily, offering more than 14,000 roundtrip seats.

Below is the breakdown of the two new routes:

Flights to San Diego had already been planned, with a launch date of August 7. Now, by the time August 7 comes around, Spirit will be flying from SLC to San twice daily, with one flight operated by the A321neo and the other by the A321ceo. The changes on this route added more than 250 flights in the summer and over 60,000 seats.

Flights to Fort Lauderdale, where Spirit has a significant presence, had not yet been planned. According to data, service to South Florida will run through November 5, operating daily until then. More than 60,000 seats and 250 flights were also added to Fort Lauderdale.

Several other routes were added to Spirit's summer schedule, focusing on Boston and Portland. Out of Boston, the airline is adding flights to Columbus (CMH), Detroit (DTW), and Pittsburgh (PIT). Of the three, only Detroit has previously been served by Spirit, with the last flight in August 2020. Columbus will also receive new service from Newark Liberty International Airport, competing with United Airlines' several daily flights.

On the opposite side of the country, Spirit is adding two routes at Portland International Airport. Last served by Spirit in 2015, San Diego will begin receiving flights from Portland in June. Hollywood Burbank International Airport, which has never been connected to Portland by Spirit, will also have service throughout the summer. Both Portland routes were set to launch in August but were moved up to June, adding more than 44,000 seats this summer.

Analyzing the overall changes for the summer, since last week, Spirit added 1,465 flights and more than 305,000 seats, a massive increase over its summer 2023 operations.
