Second oldest congregation in Utah continues to serve Salt Lake City
The First Congregational Church is the first church outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be founded in Utah. More than a century later, the congregation still thrives. The First Congregational Church in Salt Lake City, the second oldest congregation in the state, continues to serve members of the community. The congregation dates back to 1865, when a Congregant pastor rented public space to preach to non-members of the Church of Jesus Christ. The funds were raised to build Independence Hall, a building that could seat up to 200 worshipers. In 1889, the First Congregationational Church moved into a new building, "The Stone Church," which was later torn down. The church moved into The Stone Church in 1965, with services beginning soon after. The current church currently rents space from All Saints Episcopal Church. The building will eventually be demolished for additional housing.
