Some Salt Lake City school board members rebuke $34 million plan for closed elementary school
Members of Salt Lake City School District's board disagree about whether to go forward with a planned $34 million career training center — even though most of it is being paid for by a state grant. The Salt Lake City School Board has approved a $34 million plan to convert the shuttered Riley Elementary School into a new Career and Technical Center. However, some board members have expressed concerns about the plan, citing the district's $17 million deficit and falling enrollment as reasons for caution. Most of the costs for the rebuild, $30 million, have been raised through Utah's APEX Grant Program, and another $2.11 million raised by the nonprofit Salt Lake Education Foundation. The district cannot use general or capital funds on the center unless the board specifically approves. The new CTE will bring the district’s Career and Tech Education offerings under one roof at 1410 S. 800 West in Salt Lake city.
