Elder Kearon urges reflection on cellphone, social media use
At Ensign College, Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles urged students to act on revelation for their own personal course corrections. Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has urged students to reflect upon their use of their phones, particularly in relation to social media. In a devotional at Ensign College in Salt Lake City, he encouraged students to create a plan for their phone and social media use. He used a metaphor for a man on a bus, showing him using his phone to engage with people who were also arguing, soliciting, sharing political agendas and selling things. Kearon quoted Church President Dallin H. Oaks, who advised that social media can be beneficial if you are smart and selective. He also mentioned the teachings of late President Russell M. Nelson, who invited youth to participate in a seven-day fast from social media in 2018.
