SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Construction at the new Salt Lake City International Airport is making “exciting progress”, the airport announced Tuesday.
Crews are currently working on phases three and four of the airport, which are expected to be completed in 2027.
The airport said that over the past month, a total of 14 million hours of trade work resulted in the following:
• Placement of the curtain wall for Concourse B Plaza, set to open on Oct. 22, 2024
• Full installation of The Canyon 2.0 artwork in Concourse B Plaza
• Erection of the first steel beam for Phase 4
Why is the airport getting rebuilt?
The Salt Lake City International Airport serves more than 26 million passengers a year in facilities constructed 60 years ago to handle half as many travelers, the airport’s website states.
The airport has since become a hub airport with many flights arriving and departing around the same time. Security needs are reportedly vastly different from when the airport was originally constructed, and buildings no longer meet earthquake safety standards.
“In short, though the former facilities served the airport well, it’s time to make way for the next generation of airport design,” the website states.
Crews are aiming to make the new airport easy to use, more efficient, and sustainable, among other objectives.
