Rose Park Tree Removal Mystery Tied to Possible Scam
A Rose Park tree disappeared from a vacant home for sale, and the seller suspects a scam she can't quite prove. A large tree in the front yard of a vacant Rose Park home for sale suddenly disappeared over the summer, and the owner, Cindy Maestas, has no idea who removed it or why. Daniel Larsen, interim division director of the Utah Division of Consumer Protection, believes the situation could be linked to a check overpayment scam. The scammer sends a check for more than the product or service costs, then requests the recipient to send the excess money back. The original check eventually bounces, only after the victim has already wired or returned the extra cash. These scams tend to target vacant homes as there is no one watching the property day-to-day. Anyone with information about a check-overpayment scam can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission or call 1-877-FTC-HELP.
