Salt Lake City $85M Library Bond Plan Explained

A $85 million library bond could rebuild three Salt Lake City branches. Can residents afford the tax hit? Salt Lake City is considering a $85 million bond for major work at three library facilities, including an expanded Day-Riverside branch, a rebuilt Anderson-Foothill branch, and renovations to the downtown main library. The City Council has not approved the bond, and at least one council member has questioned whether residents can afford the added cost. The largest portion of the proposed $49 million would be used to replace Anderson-foothill, a 40-year-old building that is structurally unsound. The proposal also includes $32 million for Day-riverside in Rose Park, which serves students from Escalante and Rose Park elementary schools and supports literacy programs, internet access, job applications and after-school use. Library CEO Noah Baskett has argued that libraries are essential civic infrastructure and contribute to learning, access to technology and community life. The city council and library board have already approved nearly $6 million for preparations in the latest city budget.
