Podcasting gives Utah politicians a new platform for political discourse

As smartphones and other digital devices have become all but ubiquitous across the United States, new ways of gathering information have begun to change Americans' preferences for getting news. Podcasts have become a growing factor in the political media landscape, offering candidates and pundits a chance to engage with audiences without limitations of a news broadcast on network television or radio. While only about 6% of U.S. adults now prefer podcasts as their news source, this is up from 3% five years ago, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center. This shift comes as more politicians use podcasts to boost their platforms. State Sen. Todd Weiler, a prominent Utah politician known for his outspoken stance on Capitol Hill, launched his own podcast, "ToddCastUtah" in 2019, which provides an inside look at the workings of the Utah Legislature. Other notable podcast hosts include Sen. John Johnson, who also hosts a podcast and uses podcast discussions largely by artificial intelligence to generate news articles.
