Jana Riess: The key message of the LDS Church’s new visitors’ center? We’re Christian, darn it.
The LDS Church's new Temple Square Visitors' Center places its emphasis on Jesus Christ, an indication that the faith is still trying to remind outsiders that members are Christian. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has unveiled its new Temple Square Visitors’ Center in Salt Lake City. The area has been largely closed while the church completed extensive renovations to the Salt Lake Temple, which is scheduled to reopen in 2027. The temple will open to the public for six months, free, from April to October 2027, before it reopens for church members to perform sacred ordinances. The visitors' center's emphasis on Christianity is seen as an overt declaration of that identity, particularly in an era when many evangelical Protestants doubt that Latter-Day Saints are real followers of Jesus. The church is also reaching out to outsiders via a new visitors’ center tour, which aims to explore the purpose of temples and reveal their sacred spaces.
