A fresh wave of winter is due to sweep across Salt Lake City’s Wasatch Front, with a snowstorm anticipated by late Saturday evening, continuing overnight and through Sunday morning. Residents of the region are advised to brace for potential travel impacts due to the snowfall and plummeting temperatures.

KSL meteorologist Kristen Van Dyke forecasts the snow will taper off by Sunday afternoon, paving the way for a sharp drop in temperatures. The region is expected to experience daytime highs in the high 20s to low 30s, with nighttime lows potentially plummeting into the teens on Sunday. Snow accumulation estimates include a moderate 2 to 5 inches for the Wasatch Front and a hefty 8 to 14 inches in the mountain areas.

The storm is not exclusive to the Wasatch Front, it will also affect locations in western and eastern Utah. Southern Utah’s Interstate 15 corridor could receive 2 to 4 inches, while St. George might witness a dusting to 1 inch of snow. A Winter Storm Watch has been downgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory for the Wasatch Front, with 3-6 inches of snow predicted from Saturday night through Sunday. The mountains might see snowfall ranging from 5-12 inches, with some areas potentially receiving up to 18 inches.

The storm brings a much-needed boost of powder for Utah’s mountains, which have been suffering below-normal snowfall levels. However, the consecutive storms also heighten the threat of avalanches, as the base of the mountain snowpack is currently unstable. Residents are advised to prepare for frigid air and icy conditions that are likely to linger post-storm, with further snowfall forecasted in the coming week.
