Downtown SLC intersection closing for over a month during natural gas line replacement

Dominion Energy announced Thursday that it will be closing the intersection at West Temple and 200 South in downtown Salt Lake City beginning April 1 as crews replace a natural gas line.

The closure will last through mid-May, according to a statement from the utility company.

"The system maintenance project, along 200 (South) in downtown Salt Lake, has been in progress since Spring of 2023 and is anticipated to be completed late 2024," according to the statement. "These improvements are necessary for Dominion Energy Utah to keep pace with growing customer demand for natural gas, maintain overall system integrity and continue providing safe and reliable service."

The natural gas pipe is being replaced in phases between 400 West and West Temple.

During the closure, right turns will be permitted through the intersection to maintain business access. Eastbound 200 South will also be closed to through traffic between 200 West and West Temple. However, access to businesses and parking garages will be maintained, as well as pedestrian routes and crossings.

Detour routes include 200 West, Main Street, and State Street to 300 South and South Temple.

"We appreciate the patience of residents as we complete this crucial work," Dominion spokesperson Jorgan Hofeling said in the statement.

According to the company's 200 South project website, workers are typically active between 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. during the week, with weekend work taking place if needed

"For your safety and the safety of those working in the area, please exercise caution, stay alert, and reduce speeds while driving near the work zone," according to the site. "Nearby residents and businesses can expect increased noise, dust, and vibrations associated with this type of work."
