SALT LAKE CITY — A man from Payson is being charged for his alleged actions during the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. According to the Department of Justice, the man lunged at police officers on Capitol grounds with a stun gun.

According to a statement from the Justice Department, 24-year-old Zach Rash was arrested two days ago.

The Justice Department reported having a video of Rash entering the Capitol and taking a stun gun from an unidentified person.

After making sure the stun gun worked, Rash allegedly lunged toward officers twice, triggering the gun several times before exiting the tunnel.

The stun gun never made contact with the officers.

Rush told the DOJ he never had the stun gun. When shown the photos of him with it, he admitted to taking the stun gun but said he didn’t do anything with it.

The DOJ said the footage shows Rash lunging at police officers. Rash said he didn’t think he used the stun gun but that “it could have happened.”

Rash made his initial appearance in court on April 2. He faces felony and misdemeanor charges for allegedly assaulting officers during the breach of the Capitol.

Rash is one of many Utahns implicated in the Jan. 6 attack.
