Salt Lake City cracked down on unruly parties a year ago. Here's what happened next

Salt Lake City police and leaders say an ordinance change to crack down on rowdy parties has helped reduce multiple offenses, but more adjustments could be made. Salt Lake City has cracked down on unruly parties since last year, warning over 150 property owners about having "unruly" parties. The city increased its penalty from a $428 service fee to a $1,000 fine, shifting it to the owner of the property police are dispatched to. Since this change, only 26 properties have had repeat violations with $1k fines, and only one property offering "late-night or after-hours" parties has received multiple fines. Residents of the East Central neighborhood, near the University of Utah, were most supportive of the change. Only 17% of these properties have received fines, meaning they haven't had police called to the property again. Police are pleased with the low rate of repeat offenses. Police and the mayor's office have also considered extending the 365-day rule to two years or adding layers to the law over cleanup.
