McClusky, a 21-year-old student at the University of Salt Lake City, was murdered on the campus 8 years ago. Her family has since established the Lauren McClusky Foundation to improve campus safety and keep Lauren's memory alive. Since her murder, the University has overhauled its campus police department and pledged to keep Lauren’s memory alive with a new indoor track. In a settlement, the U pledged to raise funds for the facility. If the U does not meet the deadline, it will have to make an additional $3-million donation to the McCluskeys foundation.
